The Refugee Project

The Refugee Project was sparked off by an inquiry from a 15-year-old youth after a church service to find out how he can serve or volunteer with Habibi Singapore among the refugees. The message preached during the service was about missions among the marginalized communities and Habibi Singapore was cited as one local Christian NGO working among the internally displaced people in Iraq.

The inquiry from this youth brought to attention the lack of teaching and education of the global refugee crisis among youths in the age group of 13-18. Sharing of the refugee crisis are mostly among the young adults and older as they are deemed more mature and perhaps more ready and able to volunteer in some ways and perhaps one day to serve longer term in one of the refugee communities overseas.

With this lack surfaced, the enquiry from the 15-year-old youth illustrates the fact that youths within the 13-18 age range are not incapable of showing concern and interest to the world refugee crisis. Perhaps what is needed is simply to bring to their awareness this global crisis through an intentional effort to inform and educate them.

The Refugee Project should culminate in the youths putting together an exhibition on the Global Refugee Crisis in the month of June for the larger community to tie in with the World Refugee Day. The youths will serve as spokespersons for the Global Refugee Crisis and through the exhibition the awareness of the Global Refugee Crisis will be raised. It is our hope that through the Refugee Project, the youths will take a deeper interest in the global refugee crisis, have a better understanding of the complexities involved, be inspired to invest time and effort in their education and make vocational choices that will contribute to the transformation of mindsets to help refugees.
